Gutter installation cost by home size
Most homes have 100 to 200 linear feet of gutters. HomeGuide gives a typical length and total for each home size, for a single-story house with a straightforward roofline, at its average of $12 to $25 per foot:
| Home size | Typical gutter length | Installed cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | 130 ft | $1,600 to $3,300 |
| 1,500 sq ft | 150 ft | $1,800 to $3,800 |
| 2,000 sq ft | 180 ft | $2,200 to $4,500 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 200 ft | $2,400 to $5,000 |
| 3,000 sq ft | 220 ft | $2,600 to $5,500 |
| 3,500 sq ft | 240 ft | $2,900 to $6,000 |
Gutters run along the eaves, not across the floor plan, so length grows more slowly than floor area: the source’s rule of thumb is roughly one foot of gutter for every 10 square feet of home, but its own table starts at 130 feet for a 1,000 square foot house. If you can measure the eaves, enter your own length in the calculator.
Gutter cost per foot by material
Material sets the price per foot and how long the gutters last. The price per foot and the lifespan are HomeGuide’s; the 200-foot total and the cost per year of service are our arithmetic. For vinyl, HomeGuide’s own 200-foot total of $1,000 to $2,000 does not match its $8 to $12 per foot, so we use the per-foot price, which gives $1,600 to $2,400.
| Material | Per linear foot | 200 ft installed | Lifespan (years) | Per year, 200 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | $10 to $20 | $2,000 to $4,000 | 20 to 30 | $65 to $200 |
| Vinyl / PVC | $8 to $12 | $1,600 to $2,400 | 10 to 20 | $80 to $240 |
| Steel | $10 to $35 | $2,000 to $7,000 | 20 to 50 | $40 to $350 |
| Copper | $25 to $40 | $5,000 to $8,000 | 50 to 100 | $50 to $160 |
| Wood | $25 to $45 | $5,000 to $9,000 | 15 to 50 | $100 to $600 |
| Zinc | $35 to $45 | $7,000 to $9,000 | 30 to 80+ | $90 to $300 |
Per year, the cheap and the expensive options meet. Vinyl is the lowest price up front but can wear out in 10 years; copper costs several times as much yet, over a 50 to 100 year life, can cost no more per year than vinyl. Aluminum sits in the middle on both counts. HomeGuide’s FAQ gives shorter lifespans than its table for some materials, such as 10 to 15 years for vinyl; we use the table.
What adds to the price
HomeGuide lists these adders on top of the base price per foot. The calculator includes the ones marked with an option above:
- Two-story home: $1 to $3 or more per linear foot, for the equipment and safety work at height.
- 6-inch gutters: $1 to $2 per linear foot over the standard 5-inch, for heavy rainfall or large roofs.
- Half-round gutters: $1 to $2 per linear foot over K-style.
- Seamless gutters: $3 to $5 or more per linear foot over sectional gutters.
- Downspouts: $30 to $75 each installed, plus $10 to $50 per downspout for splash blocks or extensions.
- Removing old gutters: $50 to $200 for the job.
- Gutter guards: $15 to $45 per linear foot installed.
- Fascia: $5 to $12 per linear foot to replace rotted fascia boards, or $9 to $34 per foot for fascia and soffits together; our soffit and fascia cost calculator prices it for your eaves.
- Custom colors: $1 to $4 or more per linear foot for painting or color matching.
- Permits: $50 to $200 where local codes require one.
How to work out gutter cost
Take a 2,000 square foot single-story home with aluminum gutters, four downspouts and old gutters to remove. HomeGuide’s typical length is 180 feet, so the gutters cost 180 × $10 to $20 = $1,800 to $3,600. Four downspouts at $30 to $75 and removal at $50 to $200 add $170 to $500, for a total of $2,000 to $4,100. Over aluminum’s 20 to 30 year life, the gutters work out at $60 to $180 a year.
Repair or replace
Gutter repairs cost $100 to $450 on average. HomeGuide’s signs that gutters need replacing are cracks, holes or rust, gutters pulling away from the fascia, sagging sections, water stains on the siding below, and peeling paint or mold along the foundation. Its rule is that with several of those problems, or gutters over 20 years old, replacement is often more cost effective than patching. A section can be replaced on its own, but matching faded colors or discontinued profiles is hard.
What this page does not give
- Steep or hard-to-reach rooflines. HomeGuide says difficult roof access adds 10 to 30 percent and poor site access 15 to 25 percent. The calculator leaves these out because they depend on your house.
- Sectional or seamless in the base price. The source does not say which its material prices assume, so the seamless difference is listed above rather than added.
- Brand-name gutter guards. Prices for branded systems come from their own installers, and none of our sources publishes them.
- Local prices. The rates are national averages; urban labor and harsh-weather regions cost more.
