Doing the gutters or roof as well?

Soffit and fascia are cheapest to replace alongside the gutters or a new roof. These pages price both.

Soffit and fascia cost by length

Soffit and fascia are priced by the linear foot of eave, the run of roof edge they cover. HomeGuide puts the whole eave at $9 to $34 per linear foot, and most homes have 100 to 200 feet of it. Its summary calls that a square-foot price, but its own tables and every other figure in the guide are per linear foot, so this page uses linear feet throughout. The soffit and fascia guide explains which part is which.

Eave lengthFasciaSoffit, 1 ft wideSoffit, 2 ft wideBoth
25 ft$125 to $300$100 to $275$200 to $550$225 to $850
50 ft$250 to $600$200 to $550$400 to $1,100$450 to $1,700
100 ft$500 to $1,200$400 to $1,100$800 to $2,200$900 to $3,400
150 ft$750 to $1,800$600 to $1,650$1,200 to $3,300$1,350 to $5,100
200 ft$1,000 to $2,400$800 to $2,200$1,600 to $4,400$1,800 to $6,800
250 ft$1,250 to $3,000$1,000 to $2,750$2,000 to $5,500$2,250 to $8,500
300 ft$1,500 to $3,600$1,200 to $3,300$2,400 to $6,600$2,700 to $10,200

The last column runs from fascia with narrow soffit at the low end to fascia with wide soffit at the high end, which is how HomeGuide’s own table is built. To measure your eaves, add up the length of every roof edge that has a gutter, plus any overhanging gable ends you want covered.

Fascia board replacement cost

Fascia is the board along the roof edge that the gutters hang from. Replacing it costs $5 to $12 per linear foot installed: $3 to $5 for the board and $2 to $7 for labor, a price that includes taking down and rehanging the gutters. The boards alone, by material:

MaterialFascia, per ftSoffit, per ft
Vinyl or PVC$1.50 to $5.00$1.00 to $2.50
Aluminum$1.25 to $4.00$2.00 to $3.50
Wood or cedar$2.00 to $5.00$1.50 to $4.50
Fiber cement$1.00 to $2.00$2.00 to $4.00
Composite or engineered wood$4.00 to $7.00$1.00 to $2.00

Material prices only, from HomeGuide; soffit prices are for 1 foot wide stock. Wood is the most common fascia but resists water worst, which is why vinyl, aluminum, composite and fiber cement are popular replacements. Aluminum fascia wrap, at $3 to $4 per foot installed, caps a wood board in metal instead of replacing it.

Soffit replacement cost

Soffit is the panel under the overhang, between the fascia and the wall. HomeGuide prices it by width: $4 to $11 per linear foot for soffit up to 1 foot wide ($2 to $5 materials, $2 to $6 labor) and $8 to $22 for 2 feet wide, since both material and labor double. Many contractors quote soffit by the square foot instead, at $4 to $11 per square foot installed. Panels come in 8 to 12 foot lengths, 1 to 2 feet wide.

Vented soffit is how most attics take in air. Continuous vented soffit costs $0.50 to $2.00 per foot for the panels, and adding vents to existing soffit costs $15 to $30 each for individual units or $2.50 to $4.00 per foot for continuous strips. Our attic ventilation calculator works out how much intake vent area your attic needs.

Labor and other costs

Labor runs $2 to $7 per linear foot for fascia and $2 to $6 for 1 foot soffit, and most contractors charge a minimum of $150 to $300. Removing the old trim, $1 to $2 per foot, is usually included. HomeGuide’s other cost factors:

  • Gutters: new gutters $12 to $25 per foot, gutter repair $100 to $450, cleaning $100 to $250.
  • Drip edge: new drip edge along the roof edge, $1.50 to $3.00 per foot.
  • Height and access: the prices assume a one-story home; second stories and hard-to-reach eaves add labor and safety equipment.
  • Eave details: how the drip edge, valley flashing ends and sub-fascia were built, and any awnings in the way, add time.
  • Blocked vents: clearing insulation from behind soffit vents is extra labor.
  • Roof damage found behind the trim: a minor roof repair is $150 to $1,000; our roof repair cost guide covers the rest.

Soffit and fascia repair cost

A repair, rather than a full replacement, costs $500 to $2,600 on average, depending on how much needs replacing, its condition and how easy it is to reach. Smaller jobs from HomeGuide’s list:

  • Painting soffit or fascia: $2 to $7 per linear foot.
  • Caulking minor cracks: $10 to $15 per linear foot.
  • Filling holes with waterproof putty: $20 to $50 per square foot.
  • Cleaning: $0.35 to $0.75 per square foot.
  • Removing a bird or wasp nest: $125 to $700.

For rotted boards, HomeGuide’s roof repair guide notes that sealing or patching may work for small holes, but most professionals recommend replacing the damaged boards instead, at the per-foot rates above.

Repair, replace, or wait for the roof

HomeGuide says vinyl, wood and aluminum soffit and fascia last 10 to 20 years on average and steel and fiber cement 30 years or more, depending on installation, climate and upkeep. Set the $500 to $2,600 of a typical repair against $1,350 to $3,450 to replace 150 feet of fascia and 1 foot soffit outright. If the roof is due within a few years, HomeGuide notes that replacing soffit and fascia during the reroof is the cheapest time to do it.

What this page does not give

  • Local prices. These are national averages for a one-story home.
  • Rot behind the trim. Damaged rafter tails or roof decking are priced separately once they are found.
  • Custom trim. Decorative or wide built-up eaves cost more than the stock sizes priced here.
