What the site is for

Roofing is priced in units most homeowners have never used: squares, bundles, pitch multipliers and waste factors. The calculators here turn the measurements you can take yourself into those units, and the cost guides explain what those units typically cost across the country. The aim is that you walk into a contractor conversation knowing roughly how big your roof is, how much material it needs and what a fair range looks like.

Who it serves

US homeowners pricing a replacement, a repair or a new build. Contractors and estimators are welcome to use the calculators, but the explanations are written for someone doing this for the first time.

What it does not do

• It is not a roofing contractor and does not install, inspect or repair roofs.
• It does not give quotes. Every cost figure on the site is a national estimate built from public data. Your price will depend on your location, your roof and the contractor you choose.
• It does not have field roofing experience behind it. The numbers are researched from public sources, and the methodology page lists exactly which ones and how often they are checked.

How the numbers are made

The calculators are plain arithmetic, and each one shows its formulas on the page so you can check the working.
